The Top songs on the radio have 9,000-10,000 spins each, and Britney, whose single just came out 4 days ago is at about 2x as many spins as Kris, Leona Lewis's song has been out for maybe a week or so longer than Kris' and has double his spins, and CHRIS BROWN has more spins than Kris with his new song...The top songs on the radio all get about 100-200,000 downloads per week

more explanation of radio spins
Quote:
walk127
...It's actually not horrible for a new artist, considered untested by radio programmers. Britney Spears, Leona Lewis and Chris Brown are all more than proven artists, who have had huge radio hits in the past. They get immediate adds and spins simply because of their track records. It has nothing to do with the songs. In fact, many a craptastic song has made a rapid ascent to the top of the charts because of who is singing it, not what they are singing.

In addition, if LLWD is going to make it anywhere on radio, it's on HAC, where it will have to prove itself before Top 40/M programmers pay much attention. HAC is a slower build than Top 40. Even so, while it is early days, LLWD is doing better than Leona Lewis's Happy, which is showing HAC spins for the last four weeks. For the week ending Oct-2, Happy has 132 spins on HAC, while LLWD has 155. Neither Britney Spears's song 3 nor Chris Brown's song I Can Transform You (f. L'il Wayne) are getting any spins yet on HAC. Spears's spins are all from Top 40/M and Brown's are all from Urban formats.

Your Random Friday Memo
Brian Mansfield

For this week's Random Friday Memo, I picked up a few bonus numbers from the Nielsen SoundScan folks that I figured you might enjoy: the cumulative track downloads for three of this past American Idol season's top finishers. (If I had realized Danny Gokey would debut his single this week, I would've gotten his, too.)

Kris Allen: 1.1 million
Adam Lambert: 923,000
Allison Iraheta: 31,000

I don't know that the tallies at this point have much value as anything other than a curiosity, but read into them what you will. BTW, the Adam Lambert/Allison Iraheta version of Slow Ride has 42,000 downloads, while the Kris Allen/Danny Gokey Renegade has sold 20,000 copies.

The numbers shouldn't include downloads sold during the season, which were never reported; it's unimaginable to me that Allison's numbers wouldn't be higher if they did. I also doubt they would include video downloads. I wouldn't think they would include the download passes, except perhaps the tracks that have since come out that would apply to those passes -- I've never heard how passes are counted in SoundScan totals. But they do include "No Boundaries."

As far as Allison's numbers being low, you have to remember that she didn't have the benefit of a finals performance or a coronation song to boost her sales numbers. That's one of the reasons I said I wouldn't read too much into these numbers.

For my own peace of mind, I have done some more comparative charts with other other AI debut singles: LO, Crush, Tattoo, LLWD and FIBOU.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/oimg?key ... 7760989675

Some facts about the various releases:
- Tattoo was released for download a month after its radio premier so had a significant spin count.
- Crush was released for download two weeks after its radio premiere. As it was an immediate radio hit, it also had a good radio presence.
- LO was released a week after its radio premier.
- LLWD was released a few days after its radio premier.
- FIBOU was released for download three weeks after its radio premier but hadn't taken off on radio. It was also available for download for a day some time before its official release. Some fans will have bought it the.
- TFM hasn't been sent to radio
- FYE was available through AO as a single or as part of the Deluxe package before it was available on ITunes. We don't know how much was sold through AO, so we don't the impact on the ITunes position.

The best-selling Idol albums from 2009

Some of you expressed an interest in seeing comparative sales data for all the American Idol albums released in 2009. It has taken me awhile to pull it together, but I've finally got a list. (One note: The numbers are release-to-date totals, meaning they include the first week of 2010. But I don't think a strict 2009 sales list would change any of the places.)

Re: Purchasing Remix EP Strategy (4/9 AO, 4/13 iTunes)
Fuck strategy - buy whatever you want based on what your Adam collection is missing.

Let me clarify further:
- REMIX EP sales DO NOT count towards FYE album sales, this is an entirely separate title and will show up in the Top 200 of the Billboard Albums and/or Digital Albums chart, IF it sells enough copies. The first is unlikely, the second could happen, but let us worry about charts, you guys enjoy the music.
- All individual EP song downloads purchased from the AO store, iTunes, Rhapsody, etc., will be tallied as such in Billboard's HOT Digital Songs Chart, which combines all versions of a given song (original, remixes, clean and dirty edits) under a single title. So it is true that "WWFM" and "FYE" sales totals for next week (or the following - see below) should benefit from the remix sales.
- As was stated earlier, the FYE Japanese imports DO count towards FYE album sales here in the U.S., and were responsible for the increases seen in recent weeks.
- I have yet to confirm with my sales team, but I'm pretty sure we'll be waiting until NEXT week to report the AO sales figures for the EP and its tracks, in order to maximize '1st week' numbers and charts once the iTunes numbers are reported.

But again, never mind strategy! Buy whatever songs you want when you want, beginning on the 9th.
